What determines mobile app cost in Egypt?
Ask three companies to price "an app like Talabat" and you will usually get three wildly different numbers. That is rarely dishonesty — each side is simply assuming a different scope of work. Based on published market pricing we reviewed in Egypt, and our own delivery experience since 2014, these are the five factors that genuinely move the price:
1. Feature scope — the biggest factor by far
The gap between "a simple appointment-booking app" and "a booking app with online payments, chat, notifications and loyalty points" can easily double the cost or more. Every extra screen means design, development and testing time, and every "live" feature (real-time tracking, instant chat) adds server-side work on top of the app itself. That is why serious app pricing always starts from a feature list, never from the name of the idea.
2. Platforms: Android, iOS, or both?
The good news: cross-platform technologies such as Flutter and React Native — the stack we actually build with — let you launch on Android and iOS from a single codebase, at a cost very close to building for one platform. Fully native development (Kotlin for Android plus Swift for iOS) means two teams and two codebases, and typically adds 60–80%. Native has its place — heavy games, advanced media processing — but for most commercial apps cross-platform is the smarter route.
3. Design tier and user experience
A professional standard design built on proven UI patterns serves most projects well. A fully custom design around your brand adds roughly 25%, and a premium tier with motion and rich interactions adds roughly 50%. A practical rule: invest in design in proportion to how much your business model depends on visual impression — a fashion or lifestyle app deserves more than an internal operations tool.
4. Backend and admin dashboard — the invisible half
The app your users see is only half the project. The other half is the backend: the database, the API, and a web dashboard where you manage content, orders and users. In our quotes the admin dashboard is included in the base price — but watch for this when comparing offers. Some low quotes include no dashboard at all, and you only discover after signing that running your own app needs a second budget.
5. Who builds it, and how it is delivered
A solo freelancer is cheaper than a company — the difference shows up in the written contract, code ownership, testing on real devices, post-launch support, and continuity when your project grows. The lowest quote is not always the lowest lifetime cost: an app that has to be rebuilt from scratch a year later is the most expensive app of all. How to launch for less: the MVP approach
The advice we repeat most often to new founders: do not build everything in version one. An MVP — a minimum viable product — carries only the core features that prove the idea works and that the market actually wants it. In practice that means:
- Write down every feature you dream of, then cut ruthlessly. For each one ask: would launch fail without it? If the answer is no, it belongs in version two. Chat, loyalty points and a second language are almost always safe to postpone.
- Start cross-platform. Flutter or React Native gives you both stores for roughly the price of one platform — the right call for an MVP in nine cases out of ten. See our Flutter vs React Native comparison.
- Use ready-made services where they don't differentiate you. A payment gateway like Paymob or Fawry, notifications through Firebase — there is no reason to build these from scratch. Spend your "custom" budget only on the feature that makes your idea unique.
- Plan version two from day one. A cheap MVP built on a weak foundation becomes a trap: every expansion means a rebuild. Insist on a scalable architecture even while the feature set is small.
With this approach the launch budget drops to roughly EGP 165,000–250,000 instead of double that, you reach the market in 6–10 weeks instead of half a year, and — most importantly — you spend the version-two budget based on real user behaviour rather than guesswork.
Common mistakes when budgeting an app
- Forgetting the running costs. An app is not a one-off payment: server hosting (starting from a few thousand EGP per year and growing with your users), store fees ($99/year for an Apple developer account, $25 one-time for Google), and annual maintenance typically at 15–18% of the build cost. Budget for these from day one.
- Comparing unequal quotes. A EGP 100,000 offer with no dashboard, no testing and no code ownership is not cheaper than a EGP 250,000 offer that includes them — it is an offer for a different product. Fix a single requirements list first, then compare quotes against it line by line.
- Spending the entire budget on the build and nothing on the launch. The best app with zero marketing and unoptimised store listings gets no downloads. Reserve part of the budget for what happens after publishing.
- Starting development before documenting requirements. "We'll figure it out as we go" is the most expensive way to build an app: every mid-build change costs several times what it would have cost specified upfront. Write your requirements down — our free app requirements template helps.
- Ignoring code and account ownership. Get it in writing that the code, domain and store accounts are registered in your name. Without that clause you are renting your app, not owning it — and the cost of breaking free later can exceed the build itself.

How long does a mobile app take to build?
An MVP typically takes 6–10 weeks, a full commercial app 12–16 weeks, and large platforms 16–24 weeks or more. Add a week or two for App Store and Google Play review on the first release.
Should I launch on Android or iOS first?
In the Egyptian market Android holds the larger user share, so if you must pick one, start there. In practice, though, cross-platform stacks have made the question far less important: one codebase gives you both platforms at close to single-platform cost, which is what we recommend for most projects.
Flutter or fully native development?
For most commercial apps (delivery, stores, booking, education) Flutter or React Native is an excellent choice that saves the 60–80% premium of building two separate native apps, with performance your users won't notice differing.
