Frequently Asked Questions
How is a carpooling app different from a ride-hailing app?
In ride-hailing the driver has no destination of their own and goes wherever the passenger requests, with pricing based on distance and demand. In carpooling the driver already has a destination and sells spare seats, so matching is based on route overlap and pricing is usually cost-sharing rather than a commercial fare. The matching engine, pricing model and regulatory position are all different — which is why building one as a modification of the other tends to go badly.
How do you match passengers to drivers on a route?
The route is stored as a geospatial path, and a passenger request is matched by testing whether their origin and destination lie close enough to that path within an acceptable detour tolerance. The driver sets how far they are willing to deviate, and the engine ranks matches by detour cost, timing fit and rating.
What safety features are included?
Identity, licence and vehicle verification before a driver can publish a trip; two-way ratings; live trip sharing with a trusted contact; an in-app SOS that broadcasts location; number masking so personal phone numbers are never exchanged; and a complete trip record with location history for dispute resolution. Where the market calls for it, we implement women-only trip filtering.
Can passengers pay in cash?
Yes, and in several markets you still need it. We support cash trips with driver-side confirmation and reconciliation against platform commission, alongside in-app wallet and card payment. The commission model for cash trips is configurable, because collecting your fee on a cash transaction is the hard part.
How does the platform make money?
Usually a commission per seat booked, a fixed booking fee, a driver subscription instead of per-trip commission, or premium visibility for drivers. Carpooling margins are thinner than ride-hailing because fares are cost-sharing rather than commercial, so the model needs to be chosen deliberately — we work through it with you during scoping.
Do we need a transport licence to operate this?
Very possibly, and it varies by country. Several markets regulate commercial passenger transport tightly, and some treat cost-sharing carpooling differently from paid transport. We will raise this at scoping so it informs your model, but obtaining the permissions is your responsibility and you should take local legal advice.
Can it handle recurring daily commutes?
Yes. Recurring trips with saved routes, weekly schedules, regular co-riders and subscription pricing are supported. Commuter pooling behaves quite differently from one-off intercity travel, and both models are covered in the platform.
